Meet the Organizers: West Jefferson County Community Task Force
The WJCCTF focuses on the environmental justice concerns of 12 neighborhoods in West Louisville, providing them with research and empowering them to make informed decisions.
The West Jefferson County Community Task Force was established by the Jefferson County Division of Environmental Health and Protection to identify environmental problems in the West Louisville area, to prioritize and communicate those concerns, to develop recommendations and strategies to address them, and to ensure those strategies are implemented “so that all parties contribute appropriately as good neighbors to the well-being of the community.”
Its mission is to provide research and studies to validate or nullify environmental concerns and issues raised by the residents of West Jefferson County and to empower them to make informed decisions.
Residents and any interested party are invited to attend monthly educational community meetings to exchange information, hear presentations, on changes that effect quality of life,
Providing resources and information on air quality, water, soil, health and more.
The Task Force spearheaded the West Louisville Air Toxics monitoring that provided the basis for the STAR (Strategic Toxic Air Reduction) project, responsible for an 85% reduction of many chemicals and non-detects for others. The main target for this study was the Rubbertown complex located in southwest Jefferson County, Louisville area’s largest source of industrial emissions, and the Superfund clean-up site, the former Black Leaf Chemical site in collaboration with EPA and the Ky Division for Waste Management.
