As the days get shorter, complicated by the restrictions of COVID-19, it becomes even more important to look for ways to maintain our physical activity. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, you need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity to stay healthy. That translates to about a 30 minute brisk walk five days a week.

But maintaining a walking routine is not just for the health benefits, but also for the boost it gives to your mental health. Walking helps manage anxiety and depression- an important factor to monitor for as people become more restless from trying to “shelter in place” responsibly. Maintaining a good walking routine, whether outdoors, or on a home treadmill, is an all-natural way to keep your spirits up and your body in peak condition.
And if you wonder about the safety of walking outdoors during the pandemic, just practice your recommended advice to stay six feet away from other people. The Center for Disease Control even recommends that you continue to wear a mask, even in the outdoors.
If you choose to do your walking in a gym, be aware that enclosed spaces are of higher risk and some studies suggest that the virus can linger on plastic or stainless steel surfaces for up to three days. So know the facts before planning your walk.
We hope that you also use your walking time to explore! When you register for the Louisville Earth Walk, you can choose from two different options: A 5k walk that you can do any time on October 24th, and our Free Form option. While we would have loved to see you in person this year, our re-imagined options will allow you the flexibility to explore, whether that be in your favorite trails or a new part of your neighborhood.

And when you participate in the Louisville Earth Walk, we hope it will lift your spirits and motivate your stride to know that you are walking in support of a good cause. Funds raised from the Louisville Earth Walk support eleven organizations in the region that are working for a more sustainable Kentucky. We invite you and your friends to help us reach our donation goal while you explore nearby nature.
We hope to see you on October 24th!
