Registration is now open for the Seventh Annual Louisville Earth Walk! The Earth Walk is a family-friendly event happening on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Shawnee Park. We will be celebrating the planet to raise awareness on how each of us can create a better quality of life for our city and its surrounding communities.
We are excited to have this year’s event at Shawnee Park which borders the Ohio River and is a cornerstone of Louisville’s park system. Help us make this year’s Earth Walk a success by inviting your family, friends, and co-workers to come walk with us and help raise funds to support safe and clean water, air and soil! You can also donate directly.
When Frederick Law Olmsted designed Louisville’s park system, he started with three main parks: Cherokee, Iroquois and Shawnee. Designed in 1892, Shawnee Park borders the Ohio River and is the West Louisville cornerstone of the park system. Two principal features of the park are the concourses that afford extensive views and the expansive Great Lawn, a signature Olmsted design feature. The Shawnee, Iroquois and Cherokee parks were the flagship parks named to recognize the Indigenous groups that figured prominently in Kentucky’s history. The park was the anchor for the Shawnee neighborhood homes that were built thereafter.
Over the years, we have held the Earth Walk at as many of these special parks throughout the city so that we can all appreciate the history and culture of these spaces in nature and the communities they serve. We are planning for a day of fun and education for kids and adults alike!
The partner organizations who will be supported by your participation include eight great local nonprofits who have a mission to create a more sustainable and liveable world for us all. These are: Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Kentucky Conservation Committee, Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light, Louisville Grows, Louisville Sustainability Council, Passionist Earth & Spirit Center, OurEarthNow, and the West Jefferson County Community Task Force.
You can also help make the event a success by encouraging your local businesses to become a sponsor for this year’s event! We are in the process of planning for a day of fun and entertainment, so we will be sending you updates. But for now, we hope you will start building your walk teams and register for the walk!
